Nanowrimo: Week 1 Update

Nanowrimo got off to a great start last Thursday... then, it fizzled out. Weekends are usually the time when Nanowrimo participants catch up on all the words they couldn't get down during the week. As a writer, weekends are my Achilles heel. I spent Saturday Christmas shopping. One day and done. So that should never be a distraction for me again. However, I'm also having to ramp up the freelance projects. I got a bum car and who knows how much that will cost to fix.

But back to the story. It seems to be going well so far, even though I had absolutely no direction other than the opening scene. I'm trying not to plan this one ahead of time in any way and it seems to be working better as a strategy. Usually with an outline I try to skip ahead the boring parts to get to the good parts. Without an outline, I have to just see where the next sentence takes me.

Although I'm currently 2 days behind (or more... I'm not quite sure), I will be catching up today. After coffee. And breakfast. And work. And... nah, I'm just kidding. I'm getting on it right now.

While I don't fully understand the idea of NaNoWriMo-type events, the great thing about it is if you win, you can say you've done it and you've got a new novel, even though it might need some editing. If you don't win, you've still got the start on a novel you can finish later. When you start a month-long project like this, you never know what life will throw at you along the way, so you can't always count on finishing no matter how hard you try.

Hope the VW doesn't need too much work... My wife had one of the old-style (rear-engined, air-cooled) models many years ago. She was looking at one of the new ones not too long ago.
